Temple trekking in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Yogyakarta is the soul of Java; it is here that the spirit of the nation is truly visible. Though modernisation has swept through the country like wild fire, the citizens of this city remain fiercely protective of their culture and heritage. This is evident in the preservation of the city's ancient temples, or candis. Built between the 7th and 9th centuries, these structures have survived wars, natural disasters and neglect, and stand majestically on their original grounds.

Borobudur:
Thought to have been built in the 9th century, Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia, and was once the centre of Buddhism in Java.

Prambanan:
The grandest temple in Indonesia after Borobudur, the Hindu house of workship comprises 250 smaller temples within its ground, all in their original form.

Candi Sari:
This was built as dormitory for monks. The temple is covered in 'Vajralepa', similar to that found in nearby Kalasan temple.
